THE DEMO WORKED ON MY COMPUTER BUT THE FULL GAME DOESN’T.

Fran Bow Demo only contains 10% of the whole game’s content (Hand-drawn graphics, 2D animations, code, sound and music, etc.). If you are experiencing white textures or a loading screen that takes forever, it’s likely because your video memory is not able to load everything that the full game contains. This is a machine setup issue which we have NO CONTROL over. You can always try the solutions listed below.

I CAN’T PLAY, THE GAME WON’T GO PAST THE LOADING SCREEN.

First, reboot your computer. Many issues that gamers experience with playing Fran Bow go away if they reboot their computer. But if this doesn’t help, please read on.

We have released a quick update to fix the startup problem that many experienced with a recent steam client update and it should be solved now! The other gaming sites (GOG, Humble Bundle, and Itch.io) have also received this update. If you are playing the game on STEAM, follow all the steps in the order shown below. If you are NOT playing through STEAM, you should manually delete the game files from your computer, then download them again from the gaming site you previously downloaded them from. This will ensure you have the latest version of the Fran Bow game. Then reinstall the game to your computer. If this doesn’t help, then proceed with the steps below to modify the parameters in the “options.ini” file.

In case you are still unable to open the game, make sure you are not in a STEAM beta branch! Closing and restarting the STEAM client should automatically put you back into the “normal” game branch. If that doesn’t work, then please “Delete Local Content” and Reinstall the game through STEAM. Complete instructions (with screenshots) for STEAM are here.

Verify Integrity of Game Cache
The first thing to do is to “verify the integrity of the game cache”. This is an operation done in the STEAM client on the game files. It will ensure that all the game files are present on your computer, and that they are not corrupted or changed from the originals on the STEAM server. If any files are missing or corrupted, they will automatically be downloaded again from the STEAM server. To “verify the integrity of the game cache”, do the following from within the STEAM client software:

  1. Right-click on Fran Bow in your STEAM library and then left-click on the Properties pick on the menu which appears.
  2. Left-click on the Local Files tab on the ‘Fran Bow – Properties’ screen.
  3. Left-click on the ‘Verify Integrity of Game Cache…’
  4. STEAM will then display a small window on your computer screen which says “Validating Steam Files”. The final message will either say “All files successfully validated” or “X file(s) failed to validate and will be reacquired” (where X is the number of missing or corrupted files).
  5. Left-click the “Close” button on the “Validating Steam Files” to close it and then left-click the “Close” button on the ‘Fran Bow – Properties’ screen to close it. This returns you to the Library screen of the STEAM client software.
  6. Try to play the Fran Bow again by left-clicking on the Play button.

If you want a more detailed guide into the steps above (with screenshots), check
out this guide (pdf guide) by clicking on this sentence.

Make sure you’re using your more powerful video card (if you have two video cards in your computer)
If you have more than one video card installed in your computer, then you’ll need to make sure you’re using the more powerful one to run the Fran Bow game. Here are some instructions on the web for making sure the more powerful video card is being used to run the Fran Bow game (if it’s a NVidia card): http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2328409/switch-nvidia-intel-graphic-cards-g56-asus-laptop.html (Scroll down a bit at that link to find the instructions), which are summarized below as well:

  1. Right Click on Desktop , select NVidia control panel.
  2. Select manage 3D settings / program settings tab
  3. Under the dropdown (1) for Programs select add, then browse, and navigate to the Fran Bow game folder (location will vary depending on which store you purchased the Fran Bow game from), and left double-click on the “Fran Bow.exe” file in that folder (it may only show as “Fran Bow” if you have “Hide Extensions for Known File Types” set to ON, the windows default).
  4. Next, find the dropdown for the Video Card to use and select the NVidia card (not the integrated video card). Then try to play the game again.

Modify “options.ini” file
If the game still does not play properly or if you experience either white boxes/textures or black screens when trying to play Fran Bow, then you can now easily make changes to the “options.ini” file that lives within the Fran Bow game folder. This may eliminate the white boxes/textures or black screen display issues.

How to find the options.ini file:

  1. Right-click on Fran Bow in your STEAM library and then left-click on the Properties pick on the menu which appears.
  2. Left-click on the “Local Files…” tab on the ‘Fran Bow – Properties’ screen.
  3. A windows explorer window will open containing all the files in the Fran Bow folder on your computer. Find the file called “options.ini” (depending on your Operating System settings, you may only see “options”–see the detailed guide below for more information on this) and open it (by left double-clicking on the “options.ini” file).
  4. Make changes to the “VertexBufferMethod” [change to either 0 (zero) or 2 (two) and/or “AlternateSyncMethod” [change to 1 (one)]!

If you want a more detailed guide into the steps above (with screenshots), check out this guide by clicking this sentence (pdf document).

* If nothing works, the game is not optimized on your current machine. Please write to us using the form at this link: https://franbowgame.wordpress.com/gamer-support/. Please be sure to mention on the form what platform you’re playing the game on (Windows/Mac/Linux, Operating System, Processor, RAM, Video Card(s) you have, and amount of Video RAM and what troubleshooting steps you’ve already tried.

WHY DON’T STEAM ACHIEVEMENTS WORK FOR ME?

This is a known bug and it’s currently being looked at. Currently achievements on Steam only work for Windows. We hope to have this fixed in the future for MAC and LINUX computers. Unfortunately, it is not a simple fix and we don’t have an estimate for when MAC and LINUX gamers will be able to have STEAM achievements.

WHY CAN’T I USE STEAM SCREENSHOTS?

This is a known bug and it’s currently being looked at. Currently only Linux users can take screenshots using F12 (default key to take screenshots) when playing through STEAM. We hope to have this fixed for Windows and Mac gamers in the future. Unfortunately, it is not a simple fix and we don’t have an estimate for when Windows and MAC gamers will be able to take screenshots within STEAM using F12.

In the meantime, there IS a workaround for this. If you wish to take screenshots using the F12 key, you can do this if you reconfigure the Fran Bow game; however, if you do this, you will lose the ability to unlock Achievements and get trading cards while you play the game with this configuration change active. If you reconfigure the game for F12 screenshots, you can later reverse the configuration to reactivate unlocking of Achievements and getting trading cards.

If you wish to configure Fran Bow to use the F12 key to generate screenshots of the game on either PC or Mac computers (and reverse it later, if you want to), please follow our guide which can be found here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-V4ozvekwP4VTdaWGVlWkRsdXc.

HOW CAN I REVERT CHANGES ON THE OPTIONS MENU IN THE GAME?

Press F10 when you are in the Fran Bow Main Menu. Note that this does NOT reverse any changes you made to the “options.ini” file in the game folder.

ON MY MAC COMPUTER, I RECEIVE THE MESSAGE “POWERPC APPLICATIONS ARE NO LONGER SUPPORTED”. WHAT DO I DO TO FIX THIS?

A few MAC computer users have experienced the error message “POWERPC APPLICATIONS ARE NO LONGER SUPPORTED” when trying to start playing Fran Bow. This problem has gone away for these players by doing one or both of these things:

  1. Restart your MAC computer, and if that doesn’t work,
  2. Delete the Fran Bow game from your computer, and then reinstall it.

If you try these steps and neither works for you, please write to us using the form at this link: https://franbowgame.wordpress.com/gamer-support/. Please be sure to mention on the form that you already rebooted your computer, and you also deleted and reinstalled the game.

IF YOU EXPERIENCE A “FROZEN SCREEN” OR “CRASHING BACK TO THE ‘HOME SCREEN’ ON YOUR IOS DEVICE.

If you are having trouble with a Fran Bow app crashing back to the Home Screen on your iOS device, or if the screen freezes within the app and no longer responds to a screen touch, try these steps to resolve the problem:

  1. If the app is frozen, close the app by pressing the HOME button to return to the Home Screen.  If the app crashed to the home screen, then you are already there.  Then “force quit” the Fran Bow app that either crashed to the Home Screen, or which became frozen. This Apple website article: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201330 on “force quitting” an app indicates that this is NOT necessary to do for apps that don’t “freeze”, but is necessary for those that do.  Just doing a restart of your device will NOT remove the Fran Bow app from “background” memory, and although Apple says that “generally, there’s no need to force an app to close unless it’s unresponsive”, this article says that it should be done for apps that freeze, I suggest you “force quit” the Fran Bow app definitely, and also “force quit” all apps running in the background as well, just in case it will help.
  2. Do a force restart of your iOS device.  According to this article on the web: http://www.iphonehacks.com/2016/01/how-to-fix-app-crashing-problems-on-iphone-or-ipad.html, a “force restart” is supposed to remove all running apps from the background memory when it is complete, while a “regular” restart leaves those apps in memory.  Here are the instructions for doing a “force restart” on Apple’s website:  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201559.
  3. If, after doing a “force quit” of the Fran Bow app, and also “force quits” of all apps in the background of your device, please delete and reinstall the Fran Bow app, and for final good measure, please do another “force restart” of your device.
  4. Ensure that there is at least 750 megabytes of free space available on your iOS device before you install a Fran Bow app directly on the device.  You can find the available free space from the “Settings” icon on your device.  Then select “General” on the left side of the “Settings” screen, and then select “About” on the right side of the “General” screen.  The “Available” setting will be shown on the right side of the “About” screen and is the amount of available space for new apps on the device.  If there is less space than this, you may experience trouble getting a Fran Bow chapter app installed.  Less space is needed to do the installation if you install the app from an already downloaded copy already present in your iTunes library on your Windows or Mac computer (rather than both downloading and installing directly on your device).  Downloading and installing an app directly on your device requires approximately 3 times the filesize of the app while the installation takes place.  This is because the .ipa file must be downloaded first which will take up between 100 and 225 megabytes of space–the filesize of the .ipa file (depending on the chapter installed), then the app must be expanded (takes more temporary space), and then the expanded files are installed on the device (taking even more space).  Once the app is installed, then the temporary files and the downloaded .ipa file are automatically removed from the device thereby freeing up two-thirds or more of the required space.  Installing from ITunes requires only between 110 and 240 megabytes of free space for each chapter (depending on which chapter you are installing). Instructions for deleting and reinstalling an app from the iOS store can be found on Apple’s website here:  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201398. Please note that when you delete and reinstall the Fran Bow app on your device, you will also delete any progress you did make in the app (the save-game state) and will have to start your gameplay in the chapter from the beginning.

If, after the force quitting the apps on your device, force restarting your device, deleting and reinstalling the Fran Bow app, and a final force restart of your device, and trying to play the Fran Bow app again, if it continues to crash, then the app just won’t play properly on your device.  You should then pursue a refund for the cost of the Fran Bow app through the Apple iOS store.  We don’t want you to pay for an app that will not play properly on your device.  Instructions for seeking refunds from the Apple iOS store can be found here:https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204084.

Return to FAQ List

I CAN’T INSTALL THE FRAN BOW GAME FROM THE GOOGLE PLAYSTORE ON MY ANDROID DEVICE.

The first thing to check is whether or not your device meets the minimum system requirements to install the game.  Each chapter of the Android version of Fran Bow requires that your Android device be running at least Android version 2.3 (Gingerbread) or higher.  You also should have at least 750 megabytes of free space available on your Android device’s “internal storage” (not “SD card” space) for a successful installation.

If you are having trouble getting one or more chapters of the Fran Bow app installed on your Android device, here are some troubleshooting steps to try:

  • Turn your phone completely off, wait for two minutes, and then turn it on again.  Then try to redownload/install the Chapter app for Fran Bow again.  Make a note of any error messages you receive during the process, including any error codes given.
  • Check your available and free storage space on your Android device.  You should find out the following specs:
    • Total “internal storage” space on your device
    • Total “available space” on “internal storage” space on your device
    • Total “SD card” space on your SD card on your device (if you have one installed)
    • Total “available space” on your SD card on your device (if you have one installed).
  • It is recommended that you have at least 750 megabytes of “available space” on “internal storage” of your device to ensure easy and trouble-free installation of any one chapter app for the Fran Bow game.  You may get by with less for some of the chapter apps, but, in general, you should have at least three times the filesize of each chapter’s app for the game.   Although all the chapters can be moved to the SD card after installation, they initially get installed onto “internal storage” first.  If you don’t have enough space there, the installation may fail (even after turning off your Android device and then turning back on).

Chapter 3 is by far the largest app of the 5 chapters of the game and is about 240 megabytes once installed.  But, you require even more space to actually install the chapter directly on your device (up to 3 times the amount of space required once installed).  This is because the application file must first be downloaded to your device before installation, then the file must be broken up into the actual game files to be installed on your device (which approximately doubles the space required), and then those individual files must be copied to the device a third time during the actual installation process.  This requires about another 240 megabytes temporarily.  Then once the game is installed, the original application file and the individual files used to actually install the game are deleted from your device, freeing up all the space temporarily used.   However, you will need approximately 750 megs of free space on your “internal storage” to allow installation of the largest Fran Bow chapter app.  If you have less than 750 megs of free space, you may have trouble installing without deleting other apps or moving them to the SD card.

Instructions for checking free space and moving apps to the SD card vary depending on your exact device; however, usually involve accessing the Settings portion of Android.  Here’s a link which gives you information on getting to the Settings portion of Android in general:
http://www.phonearena.com/news/How-to-access-the-quick-settings-menu-on-Android-with-one-move-even-from-the-lock-screen_id57381.  If this is not helpful to get to “Settings” on your device, check your documentation for your Android device make and model, or check using your favorite search engine for “how to check settings on [make/model of your android phone]”.

  • If you have less than 750 megabytes on your device’s “internal storage”, either delete additional apps you no longer need on your internal storage, or move them to the SD card.  This is usually done by going to “Settings” on your device, then going to “Apps” within “Settings”, and then selecting individual apps by touching them in the “Apps” list.  You then will get options which include “Force Stop”, “Uninstall”, “Move to SD Card”, and “Clear Data”.  Use these options to try to free up additional space in “internal storage” until you have at least 750 megabytes free space available on “internal storage”, and then try to download/install the chapter app of the Fran Bow app again.  Please note that if you choose to “Clear Data” for an app, but do not uninstall it, you will lose any gameplay progress and/or settings you established for that game/app.

We had to erase some animations and somehow minimize some assets like sound design for the mobile version, but the story and game-play remains the same.
